MUMBAI: Four people were killed and at least 60 wounded after a billboard collapsed during a fierce storm in India’s financial capital Mumbai, officials said Monday, AFP reported.

The incident occurred at a petrol station in the eastern part of the city, where the collapsed signage trapped several persons underneath.

According to municipal authorities, a total of 60 persons have been rescued from the accident site and rushed to hospitals for medical attention. Four persons succumbed to their injuries, underscoring the severity of the incident.

The collapsed billboard, measuring 70 by 50 meters, wreaked havoc at the petrol station, causing devastation and chaos. Mumbai’s police force shared details of the incident on social media.

The calamitous event unfolded amidst a backdrop of relentless winds, heavy rain, and dust storms that swept through Mumbai on Thursday. The stormy weather uprooted trees, triggered power outages across the city, and disrupted Mumbai’s train network. Reports from Indian media outlets revealed that flights at the city’s international airport were temporarily suspended, with approximately 15 planes diverted to alternative airports.

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra state, provided updates on the situation, indicating that the injured were receiving treatment at Rajawadi Hospital. Fadnavis also announced a “high-level inquiry” into the incident.
