TUNIS: Four Tunisian migrants lost their lives, and 21 others were successfully rescued after their boat sank while trying to reach the coast of Italy in search of a better life, AFP news agency reported on Wednesday, citing a judicial source.

The boat carrying the migrants capsized after departing from Sfax in eastern Tunisia on Tuesday, resulting in a tragic loss of life and highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by migrants from North Africa.

Tunisia, grappling with a severe economic crisis and shortages of essential goods, has seen a surge in the number of its citizens embarking on treacherous voyages across the Mediterranean Sea. These journeys, often undertaken on overcrowded and rickety vessels, represent the desperate hope for improved living conditions and economic opportunities abroad.

The boat, which departed from Sfax, a city situated approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the Italian island of Lampedusa, encountered tragic circumstances during its voyage. A total of 25 individuals were on board, including women and children.

Tragically, four passengers, comprising a woman and three children, did not survive the harrowing ordeal as their vessel succumbed to the unforgiving waters of the Mediterranean. The remaining 21 individuals, all of whom were Tunisian nationals, were rescued by the diligent efforts of the Tunisian coastguard.

Migration Crisis in Tunisia

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and dangers faced by migrants from Tunisia and other parts of Africa as they seek to reach Europe in pursuit of better living conditions. It also underscores the pressing need for international cooperation and comprehensive solutions to address the root causes of migration and provide safe and legal avenues for those seeking refuge and opportunity.

Furthermore, Tunisia is grappling not only with the migration crisis but also with significant political tensions since President Kais Saied’s controversial power grab in July 2021, which his opponents have labeled a “coup.” These political developments have contributed to the challenges faced by the country, making the search for better prospects abroad even more appealing to many Tunisians.
