TOKYO, Japan: Fourteen Japanese high school students were hospitalized after consuming “super spicy” potato chips on Tuesday, local media reported.
Over 30 students at a Tokyo high school shared the chips during recess, leading to complaints of nausea and acute mouth pain. A male student had brought the “R 18+ Curry Chips,” which contain ghost pepper and are marketed as extremely spicy, with warnings against consumption by those under 18, individuals with high blood pressure, and those with weak stomachs.
All affected students were conscious, though one required a wheelchair for transport. The chip manufacturer advises that the product can cause pain and strongly discourages consumption by those who are “timid.” Emergency services, the school, and the chip maker did not immediately comment.
