Free Press is Essential for Countering Fake News: President Zardari

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of journalists, allowing them to report freely without fear.  In his message on World Press Freedom Day, the President highlighted the responsibility of the media to abide by ethical standards and report accurately.

President Zardari stressed the need for an environment free of intimidation for journalists to express their views. He praised the media’s role in promoting democratic values and raising awareness about social and economic issues, particularly climate change. President expressed hope that the media would continue to contribute constructively to global awareness of climate change issues.

He emphasized the importance of press freedom and creating a safe working environment for journalists, adding that an independent press is essential for dispelling fake news and serving as a watchdog for society.

This year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the environmental crisis,” underscored the role of a free press in educating people about climate change and its impacts. Zardari called for media support in promoting environmental protection measures and countering fake news while promoting moral and ethical values.
