First set up in 1964, G77 has more than 130 members, with its chairmanship rotating among member nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Being the largest organization among developing nations, G77’s member countries account for over 80 percent of the world’s population and more than two-thirds of UN member nations.

China is not a member of the group but has been cooperating and supporting the group under the framework of “G77+China.”

Speaking at the event’s opening function, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the voice of the Group of 77+China will always be important for the United Nations system.

Earlier, developing countries declared September 16 the annual “Day of Science, Technology, and Innovation in the South”.  “We urge the world, the UN System, and the global Financial Institutions to back the efforts of the nations of the South to develop their national science and innovation systems,” the organization stated.

The statement also cited the epidemic and inadequate distribution of vaccines.  Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said on Friday that United Nations data indicates that 10 nations account for 90 percent of copyrights and 70 percent of exports of digital production technologies.
