ISLAMABAD: A significant breakthrough has been achieved as the injection of gas supply from the recently-discovered Wali (Bettani) gas field in Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has commenced, making it a landmark development in the energy sector of Pakistan.

The Oil and Gas Development Corporation (OGDCL) discovered the Wali gas field last year. In line with directives from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Federal Ministry of Energy (Petroleum Division), the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) was tasked with laying pipelines to enable the injection of gas from this newly-discovered field.

The gas flow from the Wali gas field will be processed at the OGDCL’s facility before being injected into the transmission system of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited.

Current Gas Supply from Wali Gas Field

At present, the gas supply flow rate from the Wali gas field stands at 10 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD), with expectations of it increasing to 20 MMCFD in the near future. This gas is being supplied through a recently constructed 50-kilometer-long high-pressure pipeline, connecting the OGDCL’s processing plant to the Sui Northern’s network at Kaka Khel in Lakki Marwat district. Additionally, a 16-kilometer-long gathering line was constructed by SNGPL upon the request of OGDCL as the contractor.

The construction of the pipelines faced security challenges, but despite the obstacles, SNGPL efficiently managed to complete the construction of the 66-kilometer-long pipelines with an 8-inch diameter, running from the Wali Well to the Kakakhel Valve Assembly, in the shortest possible time.

Both segments of the pipeline, comprising a 16-kilometer segment from the well to the processing plant and a 50-kilometer segment from the processing plant to the Kakakhel Valve Assembly, were successfully commissioned on June 14 and 15, respectively.

The timely completion of this pipeline construction project, which holds significant national importance given the prevailing energy crisis, was made possible through the guidance of the company’s Board of Directors, the current management, and the dedicated efforts of the SNGPL’s workforce.
