ISLAMABAD: Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has sparked a firestorm of debate by declaring Pakistan as the favourite to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, much to the dismay of Indian fans.
During an interview, Gavaskar pointed to Pakistan’s home-ground advantage as a crucial element, stating, “Pakistan should be viewed as the favourites for the Champions Trophy due to their local edge. Although India has fielded a formidable squad, recent performances suggest that Pakistan holds the advantage for the title.”
Gavaskar’s remarks about Pakistan haven’t sat well with many Indian supporters, who took to social media to express their outrage and criticism toward the cricketing icon.
It is pertinent to mention that in 1992, Sunil Gavaskar stood alone in his bold prediction that Pakistan would clinch the 1992 World Cup, even when the odds stacked against them seemed insurmountable for reaching the semi-finals.
Notably, Pakistan’s victory in the 2017 Champions Trophy final, where they trounced India by a staggering 180 runs, remains a vivid memory for cricket fans.
The tournament kicks off on February 19, with the grand final set for March 9.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will feature eight teams divided into two groups:
Group A: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand
Group B: Australia, England, South Africa, Afghanistan
