Gaza Attack: First Int’l UN Staff Member Killed in Palestinian territory

UNITED NATIONS, United States: A member of the UN security services was killed in an attack on a vehicle in Gaza on Monday, a spokesman said, adding that it was the first international UN staff member killed in the Palestinian territory since the war began.

UN chief Antonio Guterres was deeply saddened to learn of the death of a UN Department of Safety and Security (DSS) staff member and the injury of another DSS staff member when their UN vehicle was hit while traveling to a European hospital in Rafah. said his deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.

It was the UN’s “first international casualty” since the start of Israel’s offensive in Gaza in retaliation for the October 7 Hamas attack, Haq said, recalling that some 190 Palestinian UN staff, mainly staff of UN Refugee Agency (UNRWA).

“The Secretary-General condemns all attacks on UN personnel and calls for a full investigation,” Haq said.

The spokesman did not immediately release the nationality of the person killed adding that he didn’t have full details on whether it was part of a large convoy or not. He believed it was in a convoy that was moving and this was the DSS vehicle that was hit.

DSS oversees the security of UN agencies and programmes in over 130 countries around the globe.
