GAZA CITY: Israeli forces on Tuesday intensified relentless attacks on the besieged Gaza Strip, leaving the already heavily bombed Palestinian territory in ruins as the violence continuing for almost three months piled new miseries on Palestinian civilians.

The situation has further exacerbated the dire conditions faced by the 2.4 million Palestinians living under the Israeli siege, with many displaced and struggling to find shelter amid severe food shortages.

UN agencies have expressed alarm over the escalating humanitarian crisis, describing living conditions as “hopeless” for the affected population. Mostafa Shennar, a 43-year-old resident who fled Gaza City, shared the challenges faced by those seeking refuge in the crowded southern border town of Rafah.

Israel, adamant in its commitment to dismantle Hamas, has warned that the bombardments, ongoing since October 7, may continue “throughout 2024.” The Israeli offensive has already killed at least 22,185 Palestinian people, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in Gaza. The Israeli army reports 173 soldiers killed in the battle against Hamas.

As 2024 commenced, political disputes within Israel reignited, triggering mass protests against what is perceived as the most right-wing government in the country’s history. Despite the mounting casualties and global calls for restraint, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government remains resolute in its stance to continue the fight until Hamas is eradicated.

Israel Prepares for Extended Attacks in Gaza

The Israeli army announced plans to rotate out some of the over 300,000 reservists called up since October 7, indicating preparations for an extended period of conflict. However, the government has not provided details on its post-war plans for Gaza, leaving questions about reconstruction and governance unanswered.

Amid the ongoing Gaza violence, deadly clashes have erupted in the occupied West Bank, resulting in the death of at least 321 Palestinians. Meanwhile, tensions persist on the Lebanon-Israel border, with sporadic exchanges of fire involving resistance groups, particularly Hezbollah. Strikes in Syria have also been reported, further complicating the regional landscape.

While a proposal for a new hostage exchange deal was presented by Hamas via Qatari and Egyptian mediators, Israeli sources deemed it unacceptable. The situation remains tense, with uncertainties about the potential for progress in future negotiations.
