RIYADH: The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is receiving commendation for its substantial efforts in tackling the issue of illegal drugs, as stated by the head of the GCC, according to the Saudi Press Agency’s report on Thursday.

GCC Secretary-General Jasem Albudaiwi addressed the occasion of the UN International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed annually on June 26.

Albudaiwi emphasized that combating the drug trade necessitates effective international collaboration and the combined efforts of governmental institutions, civil agencies, and individuals. He underlined the commitment of GCC countries to enhancing coordination in order to thwart the operations of smugglers and establishing mechanisms to curb both drug supply and demand.

GCC Dedication to Assisting Drug Addicts

In addition to their preventive measures, the council is also dedicated to assisting drug addicts by providing them with treatment options and facilitating their reintegration into society, Albudaiwi stated. He highlighted the establishment of the GCC Criminal Information Center to Combat Drugs in 2008 as a prime example of the collaborative efforts of member nations in combating illegal drug trafficking.
