BRUSSELS, Belgium: The United States and European Union are urging a full investigation into alleged violations in Georgia’s recent parliamentary election.

With nearly all votes counted, the ruling Georgian Dream party claims 54% of the vote. This result disappointed pro-Western Georgians, who saw the election as a crucial decision between stronger Russian ties and closer European integration.

Arab media reports, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili, a former ally of Georgian Dream, encouraged public protests against what she describes as a fraudulent outcome, urging citizens to gather in Tbilisi to reject the election’s legitimacy.

International observers reported notable electoral irregularities, leading US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and EU officials to call for a thorough and transparent investigation. Both the EU and US emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values, urging Georgian leaders to address legislative and electoral deficiencies.

The controversy comes as the EU seeks to strengthen ties with former Soviet states like Georgia and Moldova, the latter also reporting Russian interference in a recent EU-related vote.
