The senior public prosecutor Gerhard Pauli said on Thursday that German government was obliged to conduct probe when German citizens are suspects in a crime committed abroad, DW reported.

However, he said that more information from the Spanish governmnet had been requested so that the investigation in Germany could be started.

Witness contacts German police

Pauli said that a witness who had sat next to the suspects for 5 hours while they were in jail and overheard conversations among them has also contacted the police in Germany.

The suspects reportedly all come from the western state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The victim informed police that the attack took place in a hotel room in the famous tourist spot of Playa de Palma. 6 suspects were apprehended shortly afterward, with one being released without charge.
