German FM Warns of Lebanon’s Imminent Collapse

BEIRUT, Lebanon: During an unannounced visit to Lebanon on Wednesday, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock cautioned that the country is on the verge of collapse, further strained by escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The ongoing clashes, which began in October 2023, have worsened the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, where hospitals are overwhelmed, and countless people have fled their homes report news agencies.

Baerbock expressed deep concern over situation in the region.

Baerbock emphasized that all military actions must respect international humanitarian law, especially when they involve UN peacekeepers. She reiterated Germany’s support for the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and condemned any deliberate attacks on peacekeepers, as these violate international law.

Baerbock’s visit marked her 12th trip to the region since the start of Israel’s conflict with Hamas. She also underscored the need for international cooperation, including efforts by the U.S., Europe, and Arab nations, to find a diplomatic solution that ensures security and safety for civilians.
