BERLIN: Interior minister of Germany on Tuesday said that the Daesh branch known as Daesh-Khorasan, which US intelligence held responsible for the mass shooting near Moscow, poses a great threat to the security of Germany.
“The threat level is still high,” Nancy Faeser in a statement said. She noted that Daesh threat was already high before the Moscow attacks.
She made the remarks four days after gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at an event outside Moscow, killing at least 139 people and injuring 180. Daesh has claimed responsibility of the terrorist attack.
The minister said that Germany will introduce provisional border controls as part of enhanced security measure during soccer’s 2024 European Championship that Berlin will host this summer.
She said security of the tournament is top priority for the German government.
The event starts on June 14 and is set to attract an estimated 2.7 million fans in grounds and up to 12 million at public viewing programs.
Faeser went on to say that the ministry has taken different measures in the police and intelligence services to enhance security if the country.
