BERLIN: A vice-president of the German parliament or Bundestag said on Friday that lawmakers will review security measures after a former MP was detained over a suspected conspiracy to overthrow the sitting government.

The conspirators are believed to be fans of Citizens of the Reich or Reichsbuerger. The Reichsbuerger is a movement whose ideology covers a spectrum of individuals who are conspiracy theorists, far-right extremists, and gun enthusiasts.

Speaking to the Funke media group, Green Party’s Katrin Goering-Eckardt said that the security measures for the Bundestag will be examined carefully and subsequently will be adjusted accordingly.

Among those detained by police across Germany on Wednesday included a judge of a Berlin court who is a former AfD party lawmaker. Birgit was a member of parliament from 2017 to 2021. AfD party is a far-right outfit.

Birgit and her fellow plotters have been accused of planning to forcefully enter Bundestag through violent means.

A list comprising 18 names who were termed as enemies were recovered from one of those detained, stated a TAZ daily report. It added that those targeted included top-level journalists and politicians.

The Reichsbuerger group’s agenda was to install Prince Heinrich XIII Reuss as leader of Germany, while Birgit would have taken over the justice portfolio in a new government. – AFP/APP
