BERLIN: Foreign Minister of Germany Annalena Baerbock will undertake a Middle East trip from Wednesday, as efforts continue to reach a deal between Israel and Hamas to end the war in Gaza.
Pressure has increased on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reach a deal to end the fighting, days after Israel’s military recovered six killed hostages from a tunnel in Gaza.
German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Kathrin Deschauer said that Baerbock will set off on Wednesday and arrive in Jordan and meet her counterpart Ayman Safadi to discuss the issue of coordinating humanitarian assistance for the people in Gaza.
She will then arrive in Israel, where she will meet Foreign Minister Israel Katz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.
“These talks will focus on plans for an immediate and urgently needed humanitarian ceasefire, which should lead to the release of the hostages and urgently needed humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza,” Deschauer said.
Baerbock will then head to the occupied West Bank, and meet with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammed Mustafa to discuss how violence can be prevented in the West Bank.
This will be Baerbock’s ninth visit to Israel and her 11th to the Middle East since the war between Israel and Hamas started on October 7 in Gaza, Deschauer said.
According to Gaza’s health ministry Israel’s relentless bombardment has killed at least 40,861 people including women and children in the besieged territory.
