BARCELONA: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit has voiced grave concern over Israel’s actions against the residents of Gaza while accusing the global community of failing to protect civilians in Palestine and stop Israel’s expansion of its regional war, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.
While addressing the ninth Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean, held in Barcelona, Aboul Gheit added that Israel escalated its regional hostilities due to international incompetence which has resulted in new suffering for the Lebanese people, who are now also under bombardment. He noted that in Gaza, 90% of the population is displaced, and crowded into shelter tents within only 10% of the territory.
He urged the participants to take cues from European nations that have recently recognized an independent Palestinian state within the borders of June 4, 1967. He also demanded an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon and the full implementation of Resolution 1701 to establish lasting security along the border. He said the international community is accountable for the continuation of this war, and demanded swift action to bring an end to the violence.
