LONDON: Google has fixed a significant issue that caused widespread crashes of its Android app late Saturday night into early Sunday, affecting users who encountered a persistent “Google keeps stopping” error.

The issue, which began shortly before midnight Pacific Time (PT), was confirmed to be fully addressed by 1:11 AM PT on Sunday.

The glitch primarily impacted users trying to perform searches through the Google app, which crashed immediately upon opening. Affected users also reported problems with the Google Search bar widget, which displayed past queries before crashing, and the Pixel Launcher search bar, which showed results momentarily before shutting down.

Google Discover was unable to launch, and the Voice Search feature caused the app to fail, resulting in a continuous cycle of error messages.

The issue was not limited to a specific version of the app; both stable and beta versions were affected across various Android operating systems, including Android 15, 14, and earlier versions. Devices impacted included popular models such as the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy series.

Despite the disruptions, other Google services like Gemini, Google Assistant, Google Lens, and Circle to Search continued to operate normally. Users could still access Google’s search engine through Chrome for Android and other platforms remained unaffected.

Google acknowledged the service disruption and recommended that users clear the app cache and data as a temporary fix. The company later confirmed that the issue had been resolved and that no further updates were necessary.

Google updated its search status dashboard, stating: “The issue with serving has been mitigated and our systems are becoming stable, but we’re still working on a fix. Affected users still experiencing issues on the Google App on Android may try to clear the app cache and the app data through the Settings app. Next update will be within 12 hours.” The dashboard later clarified, “We fixed the issue with serving. There will be no more updates.”
