MOUNT VIEW: In response to rising global crime rates and growing concerns over smartphone theft, Google is set to enhance the security of Android devices with a new AI-powered anti-theft feature. The new tool, known as Theft Detection Lock, will debut with the upcoming Android 15 update.

Announced earlier this year, the Theft Detection Lock feature employs advanced artificial intelligence, combined with the phone’s gyroscope and accelerometer, to detect suspicious movement patterns indicative of potential theft.

The system is designed to recognize erratic motions such as sudden jerks or rapid accelerations. When such activity is detected, the feature automatically locks the device’s screen to prevent unauthorized access to personal data.

Google is initially rolling out this feature to a select group of beta testers in Brazil, according to ZDNET. This phased rollout is part of a broader strategy to ensure the technology’s effectiveness before a wider release. Once fully deployed, the Theft Detection Lock feature is expected to be available on all Android 10+ devices.

In addition to Theft Detection Lock, Google has introduced several other security enhancements earlier this year to bolster device protection.
