BRUSSELS: Google has announced the release of its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Bard, in the European Union (EU), Brazil, and other countries, directly challenging OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The delayed release in the EU was due to the bloc’s plans to regulate AI amid concerns about the technology’s rapid growth. Google aims to catch up with Microsoft, which has already integrated ChatGPT-like capabilities into its products, including the Bing search engine.

Bard, initially unveiled in February, is now available in over 40 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, German, Hindi, and Spanish, expanding from its previous availability in only three languages. Google emphasizes its commitment to a responsible approach to AI, actively engaging with experts, policymakers, and privacy regulators to ensure privacy protection and incorporate user feedback.

The AI tool comes with new features, such as receiving audio responses and providing answers in different styles, including simple, long, short, professional, or casual. Additionally, users can upload photos for Bard to analyze and extract information.

While AI technology presents exciting possibilities, concerns about its impact on society persist. Experts, including OpenAI’s founder Sam Altman, have highlighted the potential risks and urged global leaders to address the existential threats posed by AI. Despite these warnings, the development of AI continues at a rapid pace.

In line with the growing regulatory focus on AI, the European Parliament recently supported a draft law that will establish comprehensive rules for AI systems, including generative AI systems like ChatGPT. The legislation aims to ensure transparency in AI-generated content and prohibits certain applications, such as real-time facial recognition systems. Negotiations between the parliament and EU member states are underway, with a goal to reach an agreement by the end of the year.

As the competition intensifies between Google’s Bard and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the advancement and responsible implementation of AI technology will continue to shape the future of human-machine interactions.
