ISLAMABAD: The federal government has allowed the sugar industry to export 250,000 metric tonnes of sugar. A decision to this effect was taken at a recent meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) chaired by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
According to the documents available with this correspondent, the percentage of each province has been fixed for the export of the commodity. This includes sixty-one percent of Punjab, Sindh thirty-two percent, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, seven percent.
As per the details, sugarcane crushed and produced during the crushing season 2021-22 was obtained from the sugar mills of the provinces.
Punjab sugar mills to export 152,500 MT of sugar
In Punjab, it was observed that in certain areas of the province, sucrose content/recovery of sugar was higher than in the other areas, and allocation of quota on the basis of sugar produced would deal a double whammy to the sugar mills having less sucrose content.
It was therefore deemed judicious and equitable to allocate quota on the basis of sugarcane crushed by each sugar mill. While Punjab has been given the quota of 152,500 metric tonnes for the export of sugar, the Cane Commissioner Punjab has distributed it amongst forty-one sugar mills keeping in view their production.
KP sugar mills to export 17,500 MT of sugar
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the quota of 17,500 metric tonnes has been distributed amongst six sugar mills. Letters in this regard have been dispatched to the relevant departments, including the Ministry of Commerce, the Federal Board of Revenue, and the State Bank of Pakistan.
