ISLAMABAD: After over-burdening domestic consumers, the federal cabinet has overloaded bulk, agricultural and commercial consumers by approving an increase in the base electricity tariff.

According to a local TV, the base tariff for industrial consumers has been kept unchanged by the cabinet. A hike of Rs: 8.04 in base tariff has been approved by the cabinet for commercial consumers. The cabinet approved a hike of Rs 6.62 for agricultural consumers, Rs 6.69 for general services, and Rs 5.96 for bulk consumers.

Agricultural consumers will face a new rate of Rs46.83 per unit, while general services will be charged Rs61.03 per unit, both increased from previous rates.

Bulk consumers will pay Rs59.96 per unit following a hike of Rs5.51. The cabinet’s decision has been conveyed to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), which is expected to approve the new rates. Once approved by NEPRA, the federal government will issue an official notification regarding the tariff adjustments. Notably, the base electricity tariff for domestic consumers has also been raised by Rs7.12 per unit, with an exemption for those using up to 200 units per month for the next three months, from July to September 2024. These adjustments are scheduled to take effect from July 1.
