GUATEMALA CITY: Guatemala’s president-elect, Bernardo Arevalo, took to the streets on Thursday, leading a massive anti-corruption protest in the capital that also demanded the removal of Attorney General Consuelo Porras, who is investigating him. Arevalo, a 65-year-old political outsider known for his anti-corruption stance, secured a surprising victory in the August polls and is set to assume office on January 14.

His unexpected win and commitment to combating corruption have unsettled the political establishment in Guatemala, leading to a barrage of legal challenges aimed at impeding his political ascent. Efforts to suspend his political party and prevent him from assuming power have added to the post-election turmoil.

Accusing Attorney General Porras of orchestrating a plot to keep him out of office, Arevalo has sought court intervention to dismiss her. The “March for Democracy” in Guatemala City witnessed thousands of participants expressing unity against corruption and advocating for democratic principles.

As the protesters marched past key institutions like the Congress, Supreme Court, and Constitutional Court, chants of “out with the corrupt!” resonated. Banners with messages such as “Out with the corrupt rats” and “No to the coup, let democracy be respected” were held high, many adorned with the blue-and-white Guatemalan flag.

The international community, including the United States, European Union, United Nations, and the Organization of American States, has expressed concern over the actions of Attorney General Consuelo Porras. She features on a U.S. list of “corrupt actors,” alongside other high-ranking Guatemalan officials, adding to the complexity of the political landscape.

Amidst these challenges, President-elect Arevalo remains steadfast in his commitment to rooting out corruption and ushering in a new era for Guatemala.
