ISLAMABD: Water crisis has been a major issue of Gwadar which is being resolved by the Water Supply Project started by Gwadar Port Authority (GPA) in Gwadar Free Zone through 1.2 MGD Sea water Desalination Plant.
People in remote areas of Balochistan were deprived of clean water due to bad governance.
Under development of Gwadar Port, the Authority took the huge task of addressing water supply issue and initiated desalination of the sea water at Gwadar Port.
Gwadar Port desalination plant begun in July 2021 and in a short time has started to benefit the local population of Gwadar. Gwadar Port development is a blessing for the people of Balochistan who were facing bad governance for a long time.
Development of 1.2 MGD Sea water Desalination Plant will have capacity to store 400 cubic meters water per day and provide clean water to thousands of homes in Gwadar and adjoining areas.
Water supply project to curb employment issue
Water supply project is also curbing the employment issue in province with around 90% of manpower being hired from within Balochistan and Gwadar.
According to reports the project spreads over the area of around 2221 acres and is excepted by completed in January 2024.
Water will be supplied through two different sources for the project. One source is the 1.2 MGD seawater desalination plant at Gwadar Port area. While the second source will be from old Airport’ water supply line network with storage capacity of 5.6 million MGD.
The network is linked with Shadi Kor Dam and Sawar Dam. Gwadar Development Authority (GDA) has already constructed 158km pipeline from the Shadi Kor and Swad dams.
After the completion of water distribution project, Agvon and Hangeng industries will receive 400 cubic meters water per day.
Other beneficiaries will be new industries in Gwadar Free Zone North. East Sea Group, Acrez Mark, Essatex industries, Idrees Steel, Bluemoon industries and Bari Textile have already submitted their investment plan for the port.
According to a recent report Gwadar port, a key project of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is poised to ascend to a more critical role in regional and global trade.
Trade at Gwadar Port has witnessed a significant uptick this year, covering various types of cargo, from bulk agricultural products to containerized goods like fertilizers and basic supplies, as well as critical items like liquefied petroleum gas.
In the first half of this year, Gwadar Port handled a container throughput of 1,162 TEUs and a bulk cargo throughput of 506,800 tons.
The Gwadar Port Free Zone covers 2,281 acres for infrastructure development, with the completion of the first phase covering 60 acres. The Free Zone has drawn the attention of 46 registered enterprises, three of which have commenced production.
Meanwhile the New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) is set to strengthen Gwadar’s global trade and connectivity role.
