ISLAMABAD: Outspoken political leader Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman on Thursday was elected as the new amir of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Pakistan for the next five years.

JI Central Information Secretary Qaisar Sharif said that more than 45,000 members of the party cast their votes to elect the new amir during the recent intra-party polls.

He said that Hafiz Naeem received over 80 percent of the votes and became the sixth amir of the party. He would remain the party’s amir till 2029, the party’s information secretary added.

Previous Amirs of Jamaat-e-Islami

The outgoing chief, Sirajul Haq, held the position of Jamaat-e-Islami chief since 2014, marking a decade-long tenure. Before him, a lineage of influential leaders including Syed Munawar Hassan, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Mian Tufail Muhammad, and Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maududi have all held this prestigious position.

Jamaat-e-Islami is one of the historically important parties within the political fabric of Pakistan. Founded in 1941 by Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maududi, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the political and ideological discourse of the country over the decades.
