CAIRO: Palestinian resistance group Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh has arrived in Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials aimed at halting the ongoing Israeli aggression and providing relief to civilians. The visit comes as mediators express concern over the dimming prospects for a new truce with Israel.

Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance group, is set to engage in talks focusing on the political situation and developments on the ground. The delegation’s agenda includes efforts to halt the aggression, address humanitarian needs, and pursue the goals of the Palestinian people.

Challenges to Gaza Truce Talks

Despite recent meetings involving Israeli and Hamas negotiators, efforts by Egyptian, Qatari, and US mediators have yielded little progress in pausing the relentless bombardment that has continued for over four months.

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani expressed concern over the lack of promising developments, indicating a challenging path forward in achieving a ceasefire.

In a statement, Haniyeh reiterated the Palestinian resistance group’s demands, including a ceasefire, Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, an end to the blockade, and ensuring safe shelter for displaced civilians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dismissed some of these demands as “delusional.”

Since October 7, at least 29,195 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the ongoing relentless Israeli bombardment campaign in Gaza, the territory’s health ministry said.
