MOSCOW: A Hamas delegation led by a leading official arrived in Moscow on Wednesday for discussions on the war in Gaza and efforts to stop it, an official with the group told Western media.

The Hamas delegation, led by Musa Abu Marzuk, is expected to meet with Russian authorities to discuss ways to stop the Israeli aggression and war on Gaza and the region.

Abu Marzuk is a senior member of Hamas’s Qatar-based political bureau and has been considered to have a pragmatic approach to talks to end the war, including backing a long-term ceasefire with Israel.

Earlier this week, two Hamas sources told media that the Palestinian group was moving towards appointing a Qatar-based ruling committee instead of a single successor to its chief Yahya Sinwar, who was assassinated by Israeli troops last week.

World leaders on Wednesday called for peace in the Middle East and Ukraine during the BRICS summit in Russia’s Kazan. Russian President Vladimir Putin has termed the gathering as a sign that Western attempts to isolate Moscow have failed.

The meeting of about 20 world leaders in Kazan is the largest diplomatic forum in Russia since the Ukraine war started in 2022.
