ISLAMABAD: Health experts on Monday asked the pollen allergy patients of the federal capital to take all essential preventive measures including increased water intake and staying away from green areas as pollen count rises in March posing a threat to allergy sufferers.

Speaking to a private news channel, allergy specialist Dr. Umar Saeed highlighted that with the arrival of spring, residents of the capital may experience pollen allergies. However, individuals with asthma and other allergies should promptly implement precautions to minimize pollen exposure.

Dr. Saeed recommended wearing a face mask covering the mouth and nose, keeping windows and doors shut, especially during dawn and dusk to prevent pollen entry, and avoiding outdoor activities during these periods.

The pollen allergy season typically commences in March, he noted, emphasizing that elevated pollen levels can pose risks to respiratory, asthma, diabetic, and hypertensive patients. He advised obtaining flu vaccines, using masks, practising frequent handwashing, and maintaining distance from individuals with flu symptoms.

Responding to a query, Dr. Saeed said that pollen concentrations are lower from 10 am to around 5 pm and higher from 5 am to 10 am and again from approximately 5 pm to midnight. He recommended sensitive individuals to remain indoors before 10 am and after 5 pm during the pollen season, wearing face masks if outdoor activities are necessary.

Moreover, citizens should adhere to a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and ensure six to eight hours of sleep daily. Seeking medical assistance upon noticing any symptoms was also emphasized.

Regarding post-outdoor activities, Dr. Saeed advised changing clothes and showering to remove pollen from the body. Additionally, he cautioned against close contact with outdoor pets, as their dander could exacerbate allergy symptoms.

Dr. Saeed further recommended maintaining room cleanliness, removing carpets and other dust-catching items, or covering them with clean materials if necessary. He highlighted that the majority of allergenic pollen originates from trees, weeds, and grass.  —APP
