ISLAMABAD: The upper and central parts of Pakistan are going to see strong monsoon activity during the next week, said the meteorological department on Monday.
It also issued a high alert asking authorities to take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.
However, as Karachi endures extreme heat and experiences its highest temperatures at night since 2021 a day earlier, there is no forecast of rain in the metropolis.
“Vigorous monsoon activity is predicted in the upper and central parts during the week. Torrential rainfall in the upper parts of the country may cause devastating effects on daily routines,” the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said in a statement.
The Met Office also asked the public that strong monsoon winds from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea and are likely to enter the upper parts of Pakistan from July 3.
Moreover, torrential rains are likely to cause flash floods in local streams and nullahs of Islamabad, Rawalpindi and other cities.
All relevant authorities have been advised to remain on high alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has activated its National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) in the wake of the upcoming monsoon season.
It said that all main rivers of Pakistan particularly Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab will be affected by heavy to moderate rains starting from July 2, 2024. The authority also issued an alert regarding lightning during monsoon rain.
The NDMA in the statement warned that the upcoming rain poses a significant risk of low to medium-level flooding in River Sutlej, with water levels likely to reach low flood levels of approximately 50,000 cusecs by July 5 and high flood levels of approximately 120,000 cusecs by July 10, 2024.
Meanwhile, travellers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel in case of heavy rainfalls, especially in flooding.
