ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Pakistan have predicted heavy snowfall and thunderstorms in the upper districts of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of the south Asian country during the first week of January.

In a statement, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said there was a likelihood of heavy snowfall on mountains till January 5.

KP’s PDMA forecast rain and snowfall in Dir, Chitral, Kohistan, Swat, Battagram, Shangla, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Buner, Malakand, Mohmand, Khyber, Bajaur, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Swabi, Bannu, Karak and Kohat.

Precautionary measures

According to officials, rain and snow are expected in north and western Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and adjoining hilly areas during the next 12 hours.

The local authority has also notified all district administrations to undertake precautionary steps and ensure the availability of large and small machines to handle any emergency.

The people have also been advised to avoid power lines, construction sites, decaying buildings, and billboards.

Observe caution

Pakistan Met Office also warned tourists to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travel during the period. However, it brought good news for the farmers as rain may be beneficial for the standing crops in Barani areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab.

It said that cold wave conditions are likely to grip most parts of the south Asian country followed by wet spell.

Meanwhile, PDMA Balochistan stated that cloudy weather was expected in most districts, with light rain and snowfall likely in Kalat, Chaman, Qilla Abdullah, Zhob, Pishin, Qilla Saifullah, Ziarat and Quetta in the southwestern province.

Local authorities have advised tourists to take essential precautions before visiting certain areas to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

They recommend checking the weather forecast ahead of time to avoid any unexpected challenges.

Things you need

It is recommended that visitors pack non-perishable, high-energy foods such as nuts, granola bars, dried fruit, and beef jerky to sustain them during their journey.

It is also important to use vehicles powered by petroleum, as CNG-based vehicles may experience technical issues in extreme cold and snowy conditions.

Additionally, authorities advise installing emergency lights in cars and carrying tire chains when traveling through snowy regions.

A well-stocked first aid kit—including medical tape, gauze pads, and bandages—is also highly recommended for added safety.
