ISLAMABAD: A new online fraud method has emerged in Pakistan, where hackers attempt to gather personal information by offering citizens the verification of educational degrees.
Typically, Pakistani citizens must get their degrees officially verified by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), the regulatory body for higher education.
However, amid complaints of WhatsApp account hacks and personal information theft disguised as degree verification, the HEC has issued a public alert. The public is cautioned that unknown individuals are making deceptive WhatsApp calls, pretending to verify degrees and stealing personal information.
An HEC spokesperson stated that these calls represent a new form of cyber fraud, and citizens should never provide personal information, as the HEC never initiates calls for document verification.
