Staff Report
PESHAWAR: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday approached the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to declare former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan and others as defaulters as they did not pay the state for using state-owned helicopters.
In the letter to NAB authorities, the ECP sought a list of the defaulters to be shared with the concerned returning officers (ROs) later.
Illegal use of helicopter
According to the NAB officials, two helicopters owned by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provincial government had been used illegally to take 1800 trips, including 588 trips for politicians, 577 government officials, and 635 others. The total amount due for the usage of the helicopter is PKR 190.83 million, out of which politicians are liable to pay PKR 96.8 million.
The provincial government had declared it illegal to use its helicopters in 2008, but the constitution was amended later. The PML-N subsequently challenged the constitutional amendment in the Peshawar High Court.
