BEIRUT: Hezbollah said it targeted an Israeli army tank on Tuesday, marking the resumption of hostilities following an undeclared 48-hour pause. The Lebanese group announced that fighters successfully hit a Merkava tank inside the Hadab Yarin site using a combat drone.

Earlier, Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported a rocket fired toward the Metula settlement in northern Israel, triggering sirens and igniting a fire in the settlement’s agricultural area. This incident was noted as the first rocket attack from Lebanon in 48 hours.

The renewed violence comes amid diplomatic efforts by Amos Hochstein, a senior advisor to the US president, who visited Israel on Monday and Lebanon on Tuesday to mediate and reduce tensions between the two sides.

Since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, daily exchanges of fire have led to significant displacement of civilians on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border. The ongoing conflict has exacerbated tensions, with Hezbollah and Israeli forces frequently engaging in cross-border attacks.

The hostilities align with Israel’s continued offensive on Gaza, which has resulted in over 37,300 deaths since October 7.
