AMMAN: Lebanese group Hezbollah on Sunday claimed downing an Israeli drone that was on a combat mission in the south of Lebanon.

A statement by the group said the drone that was brought down above the Al Aishiyeh area in Lebanon’s south was waging its attacks on steadfast people of the country.

Israeli forces and Lebanon’s Hezbollah have been regularly exchanging fire for over six months along with the Gaza war, in the most serious hostilities since they fought a full-fledged war in 2006.

Hezbollah said the drone was an Israeli Hermes 450, a multi-payload drone built by Elbit Systems, an Israel-based arms manufacturer.

The fighting has sparked concern about the risk of further escalation in the region.

According to a Western media tally, at least 370 Lebanese, including more than 240 Hezbollah fighters and 68 civilians, have been killed in the skirmish.

Eighteen Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have been killed on the Israeli side of the border, according to Israeli statistics.
