BEIRUT: Lebanon’s Hezbollah group said it fired a “big rocket salvo” at the northern Israeli city of Safed on Monday, the latest large-scale attack in more than a month of war. The attack comes as the Israeli military claimed the killing of a top Hezbollah commander in southern Lebanon.
According to a Hezbollah statement, the rocket attack on Safed represents the group’s latest offensive in support of Hamas, its ally in Gaza, as both groups are engaged in conflict with Israel.
Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it had “eliminated” Abu Ali Rida, a top Hezbollah commander overseeing operations in the Baraachit area of southern Lebanon.

The IDF described Rida as responsible for planning and executing rocket and anti-tank missile attacks on Israeli forces and coordinating Hezbollah operatives’ activities in the region. The IDF did not disclose the timing of the airstrike that reportedly killed Rida.
The ongoing war between Hezbollah and Israel began in late September after nearly a year of near-daily cross-border skirmishes.
The Israeli military has intensified its campaign against Hezbollah, targeting multiple sites in southern Lebanon.
