BEIRUT: Lebanese group Hezbollah fired successive barrages of rockets at northern Israel on Wednesday, following an Israeli air strike killed a senior commander of the group in south Lebanon the previous day.

Israeli army and Hezbollah have traded near-daily cross-border fire since October 7.

Hezbollah claimed responsibility for firing “dozens of Katyusha rockets” at multiple Israeli bases and barracks in the north. The group also targeted a military facility with guided missiles, citing retaliation for the assassination of their commander by Israeli forces.

The Israeli army reported that over 150 projectiles were launched from Lebanon in successive barrages. While some were intercepted, others struck Israeli territory, sparking fires in the northern regions. Despite the intensity of the attack, there were no immediate reports of casualties, according to Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service.

The retaliation from Hezbollah came swiftly after the Israeli military confirmed the assassination of Taleb Sami Abdallah, a senior commander, in a strike on a Hezbollah command center in southern Lebanon. Abdallah, described as one of Hezbollah’s key figures in southern Lebanon.

In response to the rocket fire, the Israeli military targeted a rocket launcher in south Lebanon from which the projectiles were launched, according to army statements.

As temperatures have soared in recent days, the exchanges of fire have sparked multiple brush fires on both sides of the border.

“Israel Fire and Rescue Services are currently operating to extinguish the fires that broke out as a result of the launches,” the military said.

Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service said there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

The latest barrages from Lebanon came after an Israeli air strike killed a senior Hezbollah commander on Tuesday.

The Israeli army confirmed on Wednesday that it had killed Taleb Sami Abdallah in a strike on a Hezbollah command centre in southern Lebanon.
