SEOUL: Zhao Leji, chairman of China’s National People’s Congress and a prominent figure in the Communist Party, embarked on a crucial visit to North Korea.

This meeting marks the most substantial exchange between the two nations in approximately five years. Zhao’s discussions with North Korean counterpart Choe Ryong Hae centered on fostering exchanges and cooperation across political, economic, and cultural spheres.

They also addressed pertinent regional and international issues of mutual interest, showcasing a renewed commitment to diplomatic dialogue. Zhao’s stature as a member of China’s Politburo Standing Committee underscores the significance of this visit, particularly as both countries prepare for commemorative exchanges in 2023, marking 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties.

North Korea’s strategic efforts to strengthen alliances with China and Russia amid ongoing tensions with the United States and South Korea highlight the complex geopolitical landscape of East Asia.
