LOS ANGELES: Hollywood’s actors have announced they will go on strike, joining authors in the first industry-wide shutdown in 63 years following last-ditch dialogue failed, with about all television and film and production set to grind to a close. The Screen Actors Guild said talks had ended without an agreement on their demands over declining pay and the threat posed by AI.

Hollywood Actors Announce Strike

The union’s chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said “SAG-AFTRA’s board unanimously voted to announce a strike against the streamers and studios. The artists and writers strike will begin at 0700 GMT Friday, actors will also join writers from Friday morning in the first industry “double strike” since 1960. Writers had already announced the strike and demanded better pay and safety from the future use of AI. If strikes continue in the industry, major films could be deferred.

A strike directly prevents Hollywood actors from promoting several of the year’s major releases, at the peak of the industry’s summer blockbuster season.
