The wings of the world’s smallest birds are an almost invisible blur as they whiz around tourists visiting Bernabe Hernandez’s private garden in Cuba, transformed into a haven for a hummingbird found only on the island. In the southwestern town of Palpite, this 75-year-old Cuban has attracted the “zunzuncitos”, as they’re known locally, after planting a few trees. This small bird is listed as “near-threatened” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which estimates its population at between 22,000 and 66,000 individuals. AFP
