BEIJING: Choi Koonshum, a committee member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Chairman of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance, emphasized the significant advantages Hong Kong offers for cross-border e-commerce development.

During this year’s Two Sessions, representatives from Hong Kong expressed their support for leveraging the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, particularly Hong Kong’s foreign trade advantages, to bolster cross-border e-commerce development in China. The objective is to boost the regional economy and enhance international competitiveness.

Choi Koonshum pointed out the challenges faced by cross-border e-commerce in mainland China, such as taxation, logistics, and consulting service limitations.

In a proposal submitted during the Two Sessions, he suggested policy support to encourage e-commerce platforms to establish overseas warehouses in Hong Kong. This move, according to Choi Koonshum, would streamline the handling of goods-related issues for mainland businesses and provide efficient solutions for logistical challenges, given Hong Kong’s role as a convenient transit point for import and export activities.

Lam Kin-ngok, a CPPCC member and Chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, also proposed further promoting cross-border e-commerce cooperation between Hong Kong and mainland China.

To strengthen cooperation in the e-commerce sector, Lam Kin-ngok proposed enhancing interconnectivity and developing electronic port infrastructure. Additionally, he suggested expanding the Silk Road E-commerce pilot zone in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, aligning with Lin Long’an’s proposal.

Lin Long’an, CPPCC member and founder of Yuzhou Group, emphasized Hong Kong’s role as an international financial, shipping, and trade center, advocating for measures to promote deep integration between the digital economy and advanced manufacturing and modern services in the region.
