BRIDGETOWN: Shai Hope struck a superb unbeaten 82 from 39 balls as West Indies crushed the US on Friday, winning their T20 World Cup Super Eights clash by 9 wickets and with 9.1 overs to spare.
West Indies bowled out the US for 128 in the clash of the mega event co-hosts at Kensington Oval and then rattled off the target in just 10.5 overs with Hope smashing 8 sixes as West Indies ended on 130-1.
The victory keeps West Indies in the hunt for a position in the semi-finals and leaves the US, with defeats in both their Super Eights matches so far, on the edge of elimination.
Roston Chase did the main damage with the ball for his side with 3-19 in his four overs while Andre Russell also took three wickets. Hope sealed the win with his final six, smashing Saurabh Netravalkar over long off to the delight of the home crowd.
The Caribbean side, beaten by England in their first Super Eights encounter, now have their destiny in their own hands — if they beat South Africans in their last Group 1 clash on Sunday, they will make it to the last four.
West Indies have a better net run rate than South Africans meaning they would advance with a victory over the Proteas regardless of the results of England’s final game against Americans.
South Africa are top of the group with the maximum 4 points from their opening two matches while England are level with West Indies on two points but with a worse run-rate than the Caribbean side.
