DUBAI: Houthis have ordered all US and British personnel associated with the United Nations and its agencies to leave Yemen within a month, a UN official told western media.
The letter, dated January 20 and shared on social media, directed employees with US and British nationality in the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa to “prepare to leave the country” within one month.
The Houthis specified that the individuals must be ready to depart as soon as the deadline expires with a 24-hour notice provided by letter.
The expulsion follows joint US and British strikes against the Houthis, targeting the group’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
The United States and Britain conducted a second set of joint strikes on Tuesday.
The recent Houthi missile and drone attacks from Yemen’s coast targeted shipping they claim is linked to Israel, expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.
The Houthis responded defiantly to the US and British strikes, continuing to target ships.
The United States, a major ally of Israel, formed an international coalition to patrol the Red Sea and safeguard commercial traffic.
