CAIRO: Yemen’s Houthi militants claimed responsibility for a recent military operation targeting two US warship destroyers in the Red Sea, according to Yahya Sarea, the group’s military spokesman.

The announcement was made in a televised speech on Tuesday, where Sarea stated that the ships were attacked using a combination of naval missiles and drones.

The Houthi insurgency’s actions in the Red Sea have resulted in significant disruptions to global shipping routes, compelling shipping companies to divert vessels on longer and costlier routes around the southern tip of Africa.

This escalation of maritime attacks has raised concerns about the potential spillover of conflicts, such as the ongoing Israel-Hamas war, into broader regional instability.

Since mid-November, the Houthi militants have launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting international commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

They assert that these actions are in solidarity with Palestinians and are a response to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
