ROME: Yemen’s Houthis on Monday warned Italy that the country will become a target if it participates in attacks against Yemen. The threat was conveyed by Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, the head of the Houthi’s supreme revolutionary committee, in an interview with La Repubblica published on Monday.
Al-Houthi emphasized that Italy should maintain neutrality in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and exert pressure on Israel to halt attacks on Gaza. According to him, this diplomatic stance is crucial for achieving peace in the region. The warning comes in the midst of heightened clashes between the Houthis and the United States.
Italy recently announced its involvement in a European Union Red Sea Naval mission, aiming to protect ships from potential attacks by Yemen’s Houthi militia. The mission, set to commence in mid-February, will focus on safeguarding commercial ships and intercepting attacks but will not engage in strikes against the Houthis, clarified EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell.
