BEIJING: A collision of around 100 cars on an icy highway in eastern China on Friday left nine people injured, state media reported.

Footage shared by official broadcaster CCTV shown vehicles crammed up against each other in with one pushed skyward at an awkward angle and others reduced to pieces.

The wet road in Suzhou a city, located about one hour west of Shanghai, was full of broken glass, while emergency responders were trying to help the injured.

As no deaths were reported in the accident, however, three people were hospitalized for injuries and six others suffered minor scratches.

The police said that after the accident, which occurred at about 7:00 am local time, normal traffic flow has been resumed.

It said roads have become slippery and traffic conditions are complicated because of the recent cool and rainy weather. Police has advised the drivers to exercise caution while commuting on the roads.

Meteorological have predicted low-temperature and warned for extreme winter weather across the country.

Road accidents are not uncommon in China due to a lack of strict safety controls. In December 2022, a pile-up of at least 200 cars due to dense fog in the central Henan province left one dead.
