VIENNA, Austria: The United Nation’s nuclear watchdog, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday said that it saw “no immediate nuclear safety risk” at Europe’s biggest atomic plant after a hydroelectric dam in southern Ukraine was damaged.

“The IAEA is aware of reports of damage at Ukraine’s Kakhovka dam; IAEA experts at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant are closely monitoring the situation; no immediate nuclear safety risk at plant,” the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a tweet. The dam sits on the Dnipro river, which provides cooling water for the plant.

Meanwhile, European Union (EU) head Charles Michel expressed shock at the attack on Ukraine’s Nova Kakhovka dam and pledged to hold Russia accountable for the “war crime” of destroying civilian infrastructure.

“Shocked by the unprecedented attack of the Nova Kakhovka dam. The destruction of civilian infrastructure clearly qualifies as a war crime — and we will hold Russia and its proxies accountable,” European Council chief Michel wrote on social media. — AFP
