ISLAMABAD: New Zealand’s Matt Henry etched his name in ICC Champions Trophy history on Sunday, becoming the first bowler to claim a five-wicket haul against India in the tournament.
After New Zealand won the toss and chose to field, their bowlers made an early impact. Kyle Jamieson dismissed Rohit Sharma for 15, while Henry took the wickets of Shubman Gill (2) and Virat Kohli (11), leaving India struggling at 30-3.
Shreyas Iyer, who scored a fighting 79, along with contributions from Axar Patel (42) and Hardik Pandya (45 off 46 balls), tried to stabilise the innings.
However, Henry returned to take three more wickets, helping New Zealand limit India to 249-9.
Henry’s figures of 5-42 are the second-best by a New Zealand bowler in the Champions Trophy and the 10th best overall.
The all-time best performance remains Sri Lanka’s Farveez Maharoof’s 6-14 against the West Indies in 2006. Henry’s five-wicket haul is also the first-ever against India in the tournament, surpassing Pakistan’s Naved-ul-Hasan’s 4-25 in 2004.
Henry has now taken four or more wickets against India on three occasions, a record no other New Zealand bowler has matched. Andre Adams, Trent Boult, Jacob Oram, and Tim Southee have all done it twice.
Besides Maharoof, only Josh Hazlewood has claimed a six-wicket haul in a Champions Trophy match, doing so against New Zealand in the 2017 edition.
