ICC World Cup: Malan, Root Help England 137 Runs Win Against Bangladesh

ISLAMABAD: Dawid Malan’s fine hundred (140) and Joe Root’s quick 82 runs took England to register an easy win against Bangladesh in the ICC World Cup contest played in Dharamsala, India on Tuesday. Both the batters managed to take their side to a huge total of 364 in 50 overs.

Earlier winning the toss, Bangladesh skipper Shakib-ul-Hassan invited England to bat first. The England openers, Jhony Bairstow and Dawid Malan took a flying start and drew the side to reach a hundred in the first 13 overs. Both the openers completed their half-centuries. Bangladesh got its first success when Jhony Bairstow was out for 52.

However, when Joe Root joined Malan, both the batters almost outclassed the Bangladesh bowlers. Malana completed his superb hundred while Joe Root reached his half-century. Both batters contributed 111 runs partnership for the side and almost took the game away from the opponents. In over number 38th, Malan was dismissed on 140 while facing just 107 balls. His inning included 5 sixes and 15 boundaries. Root scored 82 of 68 balls. At that stage, Bangladesh bowlers got some quick wickets; however, England had already built a secure run rate. Other batters also contributed some runs and England reached a huge total of 364 for 9 in 50 overs.

From Bangladesh, Mahedy Hasan got 4 wickets, while Shoriful Islam grabbed 3 wickets.

Chasing a total of 365 to win, Bangladesh were unable to maintain pressure and lost their first wicket on 14 runs in the second over when Tanzid Hasan went for 1 run, followed by the dismissal of Shanto for no score on the next delivery of Topley. The side faced another loss on 26 in the sixth over when Topley dismissed the skipper Shakib on 1 run. Mahedy Hasan followed Shakib when the score reached 49 in the 9th over. From that stage, it was difficult for Bangladesh to recover. However, openers Litton Das and Mushfiq showed some resistance; both completed their half-centuries. Litton scored 76, while Mushfiq added 51 runs for his side. However, the rest of the batters were unable to recover except Towhid, who scored 39 runs. The whole team got out 227 in 48.2 overs.

From England Reece Toplay was the most successful bowler who got 4—wickets while conceding —runs. Chris Woakes took 2 wickets, while Wood, Rashid, Livingston, and Sam Curran got one wicket each. It was the first win for England in their two matches in the contest.
