ISLAMABAD: An accountability court in the federal capital Islamabad has approved the judicial remand of Imran Khan, the former prime minister and founder of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), in the Toshakhana case.

The hearing, presided over by Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir, held at Adiala Jail after Imran Khan completed his two-day physical remand.

During the proceedings, NAB prosecutor Irfan Bhola sought an extension of Imran Khan’s physical remand for an additional three days. However, the court dismissed NAB’s request for physical remand and instead ordered a 14-day judicial remand for Imran Khan.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, addressing the media outside Adiala Jail Rawalpindi, said that the party wanted a free and transparent election without any delays. He highlighted that while PTI did not want to impede the electoral process, they insisted on a fair electoral environment.

Gohar Khan shared that PTI did not have legal representation in the Supreme Court during the recent proceedings, emphasizing the party’s petition for Returning Officers to be appointed from the judiciary. He mentioned that only the Supreme Court could provide clarity on how it perceived PTI’s intentions regarding democracy.

Condemning the judicial proceedings leading to Imran Khan’s incarceration, Gohar Khan labeled them as attempts to obtain physical remand through what he described as baseless cases. He said that such actions amounted to political victimization and that jail trials violated basic human rights, labeling them a breach of democratic principles.

“This is a political victimization; there cannot be a jail trial. Such trials are a violation of basic human rights,” he added, expressing the party’s commitment to safeguarding democracy.
