ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan bemoaned the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) attempts to not allow him to exercise his constitutional right of dissolving provincial assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Addressing virtually his party’s parliamentarians, workers and supporters gathered outside the Governor House Punjab in Lahore to prevent Balighur Rehman from de-notifying Chief Minister Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi, the former prime minister reiterated his demand for holding fresh elections in the country.

Imran Khan said that he wanted to inform the nation about the situation in Punjab which is strange and precarious. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was challenging PTI to dissolve assemblies and was making tall claims of being ready for elections, but when the latter tried to dissolve Punjab Assembly, it moved a vote of no-confidence in the Assembly.

Country to slip out of hands without fresh elections

The PTI chairman explained that he wanted to dissolve provincial assemblies because he fears that “if fresh elections are not held, the country will slip out of hands”.

He said that the reason behind the laughable situation in Punjab was that the PDM government was running away from polls. “The convict [Nawaz Sharif] and Asif Ali Zardari are scared of fresh elections, because they know if the elections are held, they would be deprived of their NRO”.

Criticizing the foreign policy of the incumbent government, he said that foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had no vision and program to serve the national interests. He spent over two billion rupees on his foreign trips but did not make a single visit to Afghanistan and asked as to why the situation on the Pak-Afghan border is still tense.

He added that the government was not serious in trying to improve relations with Afghanistan.
